The Order in Chaos Update! (Beta 0.2)

Hello Hello! So glad to have you here!

Welcome to the ORDER IN CHAOS Update and the 0.2 Beta Version of Feeling Blue. A lot has changed, a lot has improved. Allow me to give you a rundown of the update.

This updates main focus are Accessibility and Tutorialization! From several playtesting sessions I was able to gather feedback in regards to the button-layout of the game, the way the game tries and sometimes fails to teach the player about important functionality and how players can miss important information if they don't immediately know where to look.

This update attempts to remedy this first and foremost by adding a lot of visual queues to several elements of the game - the interaction prompts, the energy interface, the "hidden" movement tutorial in the background of the game and more. My hope is that with these functionalities even new players can pick up on the game's mechanics quickly and enjoy the cozy, comfy experience this game is supposed to embody.

Secondarily, there's some new Content for the game! Sprites have been overhauled and added to - all clothing sprites are now fully implemented, for example. There has been the addition of backgrounds that change with your progress in the game (there's a lot more we can do with this concept), an updated (yet still unfinished) main menu background and a new song!

Below is a more detailed look into what exactly has changed. I really hope you enjoy this new update, and as always, let me know what you think!

Changelog Beta 0.2:

ACCESSIBILITY AND TUTORIALIZATION

  • added visual feedback to the brew button, hopefully making it more clear when and how you can brew
  • added visual feedback to brewing. Discovered names are now displayed, showing you what recipes are discovered and which are not.
  • new "SAVE" tutorialization  - added visual tutorialization to interaction and level up
  • added visual aid at the start of the game to make movement tutorialization more obvious
  • added the lightsOut effect to the balcony, making it more obvious as a potential point of interest at the start of the game
  • added a broken / flickering lamp to the balcony to make it more obvious that it can be explored
  • changed tea drinking key from "T" to "E" for accessibility reasons
  • changed couch and sink dialog in an effort to add more tutorialization for the player
  • added backend support for key rebinding in the future
  • added new keyboard functionality to the volume check room (space and enter)
  • improved deny dialogue (dialogue that runs when the player cannot interact with an object) to hopefully be more insightful on what it is the player currently lacks

CONTENT

  • added sprite for player clothes while sitting in balcony chair
  • added sprite for player clothes while sitting in sofa chair
  • added more room sprites to the game (living room, kitchen, entryway)
  • added a system that dynamically updates rooms according to the gamestate
  • updated main menu sprite
  • added a new song! "Simple Life" by Peppsen, available much earlier in the progression to ensure players always have something to listen to

POLISH AND GRAPHICAL IMPROVEMENTS

  • changed the way the lit windows visible from the balcony are drawn, changed and calculated
  • added slow camera pans while sitting to highlight more interesting areas on the game room (there's still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the chairs)
  • changed the way the credits are displayed when accessed from the main menu (now differentiates between regular credits and credits at the end of the game)
  • added to and changed the sprite for the plant
  • added to and changed the sprite for the wardrobe
  • small sprite improvements for winter warmers
  • visual improvement to the energy sprite
  • updated fridge sprite slightly
  • after all this time - changed the saturation on the player slightly, so they pop out more and don't disappear into the fridge
  • experimenting with a new first energy color for better visibility (light grey instead of dark grey)
  • updated after credits text

CONTENT

  • sped up dialog speed by a very small amount
  • slightly tweaked some dialog

BUGS, CRASHES AND GRAPHICAL GLITCHES

  • fixed a bug that would cause the game to crash when clicking the exit button after clicking New Game or Continue
  • fixed a bug, where clicking New Game could crash the game due to an error in how save data was handled on restart
  • fixed a bug, that would cause the game to crash when switching game rooms while alt-tabbed / minimized
  • fixed a bug that would cause the game to crash when pressing a menu button that starts the game and then immediately pressing another
  • fixed an oversight that would allow the player to toggle fullscreen while in the gameroom (this might get re-intruduced as a feature, but in its current state it was unintended as it can cause graphical and stability issues)
  • fixed a visual bug where the main menu and several other text-based overlays were displayed differently dependant on whether fullscreen was enabled
  • fixed a bug that would cause the radio to not visually repair correctly
  • fixed a bug that would cause the first textbox in the credits to display poorly
  • fixed a visual bug where the energy segments would not resize correctly on level up
  • fixed typo in credits
  • fixed animation glitch that affected the hawaiian escape and winter warmers while drinking tea
  • fixed a small graphical issue where an interaction prompt would stay on screen longer than intended causing it to overlap with other interaction prompts
  • fixed a visual glitch that would cause a prompt to falsely appear for one frame in the endgame
  • fixed a longstanding bug that would allow the player to interact with the world during the level up sequence, causing unintended layering of visual effects
  • player can no longer drink and interact at the same time
  • fixed an issue that would allow the player to move while experiencing dialog
  • fixed a bug that would allow the player to layer interactions while sitting in the sofa chair (open music menu on top of drinking on top of getting up from the chair)
  • fixed a graphical glitch that resulted in the sofachair being drawn oddly when the player sat on it (which might have made it into the promo material lol)
  • fixed a bug that would cause the camera to do funky things in the main menu upon completing the game
